About Hailstones

Hailstones

Hailstones is a dream pop / Heavygaze project with electronic and industrial undertones. Based in Calgary, AB, the band was formed in 2023 and consists of members Hesam Ohadi (Idlefon, Herr Spectre), Mehraun Ehsani (canadabasement), Jill Shannon (Dial-up) and Matt Doherty (Kue Varo And The Only Hopes). Despite being a relatively young project, Hailstones has already played notable gigs including Calgary’s Sled Island, Seattle’s ANTiPODE, and Black Ice.

Hailstones began as the brainchild of singer Hesam Ohadi, who started experimenting with piano and vocals in an entirely acoustic context after more than a decade of producing exclusively electronic music. The project soon evolved into a collaborative effort, blending Mehraun’s emotive guitar riffs, Jill’s mesmerizing bass lines, and Hesam’s vocal range—shifting effortlessly between deep resonances and celestial falsettos. In the winter of 2025, Hailstones welcomed Calgarian drummer Matt Doherty into the fold. His technical yet restrained drumming brought new momentum to the band’s rhythmic core, merging electronic and acoustic percussion in a unique way reminiscent of UK project Seefeel.

In August 2025, Hailstones released their debut LP “The Weariness of Hope”. The album takes its name from “About Dry Grasses”, a film by Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and serves as a snapshot of the band’s expansive sonic range. From the heavier textures of “Treacherous” to the more subtle atmosphere of “K-Hole” and “Cannibal Song,” the record reflects Hailstones’ exploratory approach to both sound and lyricism.

Hailstones is currently putting the finishing touches on their second LP, slated for release in the summer of 2026.
