The Weariness of Hope is the debut album by Calgary-based Hailstones, moving between shoegaze, post-rock, dream pop and dark folk while keeping its storytelling vocals firmly in the foreground.
Across six songs, dense guitars, hypnotic bass, slow-building arrangements and electronic textures frame stories of longing, disillusionment, altered states, violence, memory and fragile hope.
The album’s title is drawn from the phrase “the weariness of hope,” heard in Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s film About Dry Grasses — a sentiment that became a fitting thread through a record concerned with the exhausting persistence of hoping for something better.
